Why did you decide to rescue?
I grew up with pets in a family of animal lovers so I always knew that one day I'd rescue a puppy of my own! I recently volunteered in local shelters which made me want to adopt even more.
Please tell us your story with rescuing.
When I was still in school and then establishing my career, I really didn't have time to dedicate to a puppy, plus finding a puppy friendly apartment isn't easy! Last year I moved into an apartment in my best friend's family house. As a surprise my best friend and her parents went and found a puppy to rescue from North Shore Animal League and gave her to me last Christmas Eve! They knew how badly I wanted to adopt a puppy and now that my career is established, I have the time to take care of one. My puppy was born blind. It's sad when you first hear that, but she's the happiest little puppy and she gets around just fine! She's got a sassy little attitude and likes to play and bark like any other puppy. She is extremely sweet and everywhere we go people notice her and come to meet her! She also has these adorable big ears that seem to be one of the first things people notice!
What was your biggest fear with rescuing and how did this fear play out once all was said and done?
Well, when I first got Stevie and found out she was born was blind and with a seizure disorder, it scared me, but it also made me love her even more. I'm her eyes in the world. I was scared that she wouldn't be as happy as other puppies and I was also scared about how her seizure disorder would affect her life. Now that I've had her, I wouldn't change a thing. It's still sad to know she was born blind, but it's the only way she's ever been and she doesn't know anything is wrong, she is just living her life like a happy little girl! Her seizure disorder is scary but she's on medication that seems to be controlling it pretty well so far!
Would you rescue again?
Absolutely! I wish I could buy a farm and rescue a bunch of animals!
What would you say the most positive part of rescuing is?
Everything! You're giving an animal a great life that it possibly wouldn't have had without you! In my puppy's case, she was already adopted once and brought back to the shelter because of her medical issues and who knows how long she may have waited there for a family if my best friend hadn't found her for me! It also is such a rewarding feeling to know you're essentially saving a life and you get unconditional love in return!
What would you like everyone to know about this topic?
That there are so many animals out there that need a home and I honestly feel that rescuing them is so much more rewarding than just buying a pet! Please if you're considering getting a pet, adopt don't shop!
