Lollipop & Taco's Stories

Why did you decide to rescue?

I have had rescue dogs my whole life. My parents have always been strong advocates for adoption over buying a puppy, and they helped to shape my passion for rescue. There are thousands of healthy, loving dogs in shelters who are desperate to find their forever homes, many shelters fill over capacity and these dogs are put down if they are not adopted within a time-frame. I try and raise awareness as best I can through social media and word of mouth in the hope that people will think twice before buying a puppy from a pet store or a breeder.

Please tell us your story with rescuing.

My parents adopted our first family dog from the RSPCA when I was about seven, and then adopted another from a local shelter when I was ten. I grew up with these amazing, loving dogs and they helped me to become the rescue dog owner that I am today. My partner and I adopted Lollipop, our first rescue dog when we moved in together over four years ago. She was 6 months old at the time and incredibly timid. She was fearful of other dogs and barked at every stranger she walked past. Soon after we adopted Taco, who helped Lollipop overcome her fears and now they are the best of friends and live an incredibly happy life.

What was your biggest fear with rescuing and how did this fear play out once all was said and done?

Having grown up with rescue dogs, I was not fearful. I understand that some people think a rescue dog is going to have behavioral issues, or aggression, or have poor house training. This may sometimes be true, however some dogs are in shelters for other reasons, such as their owners passing away or financial problems. They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks, but this is also untrue.

Would you rescue again?

I will always rescue.

What would you say the most positive part of rescuing is?

The unconditional love a rescue dog will show to you is such a wonderful thing. It is so rewarding to see a shy, fearful dog come out of their shell once they realize that they are with their forever family.

What would you like everyone to know about this topic?

Rescue dogs are the greatest! In return for rescuing a dog, you will be given an endless supply of cuddles, kisses, waggy tails, the best company, an excuse to exercise daily and a wonderful feeling that you have changed, and possibly saved a life.
